maanantaina yllättävän lo­pun
Pihtiputaan pitäjän Elämän jär­ven
kylässä. Siirtolan talon karja­keittiössä
toimineen pontikkateh­taan
johdossa oli kaksi talpn tytär­tä,
joista toinen on 53-vuotias ja
toinen 45-vuotias.
Naiset olivat huolehtineet myös
pontikan markkinoinnista varsin
laajalle alueelle-Piht^utaan -pitä­jän
ulkopuolelle. Eräs pontikan
ostaja kertoi kuulusteluissa osta­neensa
vuodesta 1956 30 pulloa ppn-tikkaa
naisten ylläpitämältä tehtaal­ta.
Eräitä muitakin mainitun kylä­kunnan
naisia on sekaantunut laa-jamittaiseeirpontikkajattutnirjöhoir
ei ole sekaantunut ainuttakaan
miespuolista henkilöä. Poliisilla
oli jo hajua tehtaan sijainnista ja
tuotteen myynnistä, mutta vasta
pitkäaikainen Siirtolui talon tark­kailu
antoi viranomaisille riittäviä
todistuksia syyllisten pidättämi­seksi.

Who Deserves Your Vote? lUlliSi
'We are on the eve of a federal election again and on M a r c h 31 st
niany of us w i l l be going td the polls for the first time in our life
to vote for the candidate we think will do most for the constltuents.
A U readers are awar^ of the f act that we had a federal election
last June in which the Conservative party succeeded in getting the
biggest group of seats, but no party received a majority which is
something new in Canadian history,
Despite the fatt that the Conservatives did not have a majority
in iParliament they formed the government and we wefe quite happy
to see them make some improvements in Unemployment Insurance
benefits and make a slight out in ilncome Tax and also an increase
in old age pensions.
"VVe still recall Diefenbakers promises during the last election
and we must admit there were some very good ones. When so much
hullabaloo was ihade about his wee concessions, we thought that we
were experiencing the impossible — was Diefcnbaker actually going
to live up to his promises?
INow i t wouId seem that he was inainly interested in winning
the electorate over to his side so that he could call a new election
in the hope of gaining a majority in Pariiament. A bit unethical, but
the general practice of old-line parties.
!Now, Diefenbaker seems to have forgotten m;uiy of the issues
he raised last Summer that we thought would be in the interests of
the people of this country. A bit unethir.il too, but that too is stand­ard
practice on the part of the old-line parties. They are very liberal
with their promises during elections, but then the matters are handily
given to commissions for examinatioii and conveniently forgotten.
Both the Liberals and Tories hatve such . i history.
Maybe, we will be accused of being partisan. Weil, the truth
of the malter is that we have very definite ideas on what kind of men
we would Lke to see elected. Ar^i we hope that everybody else has
given the matter considerable thought and has carefully appraised the
candidates i n their own riding. We don't mean simply looking at
their photograph and deciding on that basis whether he is or isn't
a good guy. To arrive at a sensible coriclusion it would be necessary
to thoroughly study their prograni and what they have done in the
past.
Quite frankly, we think that the sons and daughters of workers
and farmers, like you and I are, should vote for candidates who know
our problems and can be expected to do something about it. In past
parliaments the vast naajority of MJP.'s has been from the ranks of
doctors, lawyers and business people. They are aware of what they
want and also what big business wants, but they form a very small
pereentage of the population.
The record shows that they have not been in the least concerned
about the ordinary man in the street, but have favoured big business.
And it is quite evident that big business is ready and willing ta
support such candidates and provide thcm with the necessary. funds.
'How else could they get enough funds to cover advertising costs?
IVe are confident that ordinary workers and farmers are quite
capable of representing us in Parliametit and even forming a govern­ment.
So this time, we would suggest that you vote for somebwly
who is close to the vast majority of the people and understands their
problems.
There is no such a thing as wasting a vote when your candidate
does not win. As a matter of fact, we are hoping that neither of
the old-^line parties succeeds in gaining a majority of seats. When
they do not ha^^e a majority they are forced to listen to the demands
of the people and even grant some concessions. Il they have a
majority they do as they please.
Easterners Jnvited to
B.C. s Birthday Party
Vancouver. — Out here on the West
Coast everything is done in a big
way. The timber is bigger, the rivers
are bigger and. of cOurse, the " h i l l s"
are bigger. After you understand this
mania for doing things in a big way,
you will more easily grasp the idea_
of a year-long birthday party. And
that is exactly how British Columbia
is celebrating her 100 years of prd-gress
and development.
As the fokier reads: " A full year
of excitement imd f un and festivity
from the Pacific Ocean to the lakes
and mountains of the Kootenays,
from the international boundary to
the Alaskan border, in every corner
of the 365,000 square miles which
make up B.Oifpeople are celebrating."
Yes sir. it promlsrS' to be a v ^y
wonderful year in many respects for
the citizens of B.C.
There are, however. some negatlve
features which will mar the Oenten-nial
celebrations for"^ lot of people.
First and foremost is the unemploy­ment
crisis which we're experiencing
out here. It will be extremely dlff icult
for many people who have been un-employed
for months to be gay and
light-hearted even at a birthday
party. —-—-
Secondly. many of the Centennlal
affairs and high-lights are importing
talent from the bottom of the Hol-l3rwood
cultural barrel rather than
ufiing local native artists. This fact
is also taking some of the pleasure
away irom the ceieorations m the
minds of many people. Businesses too,
have hopped on the Centennlal band-wagon
for purely Commercial nea-sons.
Thus far almost every business
large or small, has had a special
"Centennlal Sale" since the begln-ning
of January and it seems that
these sales will continue imtil 'the
end of the year.
We cannbt see that slogans like
"100 years of progress" can blend with
the Commercial advertizing which
goes on this line: "No downpayment
on this sätin backed burlap suit."
The two just don't go together!
There are, however, thousands of
people in various groups and orga-nizations
who are honestly working
for a good non-commercial Centen-nial
program for the year.
The ethnic or national groups are
definitely a part of this broad mo-vement.
We are very happy to state
that Finnish-Canadians are also very
active in the B.C. Centennlal and
that hundreds of people have re-sponded
to the Work of our Centen-nial
Committee.
The message that this -reporter
vvishes to bring to you Easterners is
that if you are wondering where to
spend your holldays in 1958. why not
consider a trip out here to British
Columbia.-Even if there ^ are some
weakncsses . in the Centennlal pro­gram.
we do feel sure that you would

Florence Says They
Had A Tough Winter
Dear Setä and readers,
I thought it was about time I
got busy and wrote to the Vapaus
again. I hope you folks are okay
after ali the, cold weather we've
had. We sure had horrible weather
out here. It'didn't drift too badly,
but there was an awful jöt of loose
snow. We got about a foot of snow
in twentyfour hours. But we qnly
missed one day of school. The bus
only went half way around the
route. It then turned back and
most of the children were told to
stay home. We only had to go to
the corner to wait for the bus, but
when it didn't come we went back
home.
Our little pup is sure trouble-some
•now. It keeps coming out of
the barn and to the house and wants
to come in. She keeps running
behind you every place you go. But
most of time it is in your way.
The motber is hardly ever around.
It has its own sport which is chas-ing
rabbits. It runs ali over the
school section. Sometime you can
hear it barking up north and a
few rainutes later you can hear it
barking from the south. When it
comes home its feet are sore from
the hard snow and twigs.
One of our neighbours passed
away. She was 91 at the time of
her death. I guess she had fallen
and broke her leg. She died of
shock.
We have been working on our
house a bit . We took the tentest
off the outer walls and ceilings.
Then we covered them with boards
and replaced the tentest. After it
was ali done the roomS were
painted.
Dad went to the Sanitorium at
Calgary on Monday. He got back
Tuesday afternoon^ A U they did
was took a blood test and X-ray
and gave him some medicine. He
has to go back again in three
months.
Our neighbour bought a new car.
It has a dark green top and a light-er
green bottom.
Roy sold ali his rabbits last week.
He said he didn't like feeding
them. SO he was told to get r id of
them. Some of them got loose.
We have put out some snares to
try to catch them. If they go into

Celebrate B.C. Gentennial
Vancouver. — On Sunday, March
2nd at two in the afternoon, the
Finnish-Oanadian Centennlal Com­mittee
held its first affair of the
year. The commernoration of the
Kalevala, which is close to the
hearts of ali Finnish-Canadians,
was combined with the Centennlal
theme and the results were very
encouraging.
The fact that over 300 people
were present at the banquet and
concert illuslrates that in Vancou­ver
there is a very great interest
in Kalevala and in the stpry of
Finnish-Canadians in British Co­lumbia.
. The food was very well prepared
and a special thanks should be
given lo the women who worked
SO hard to arrange this part of the
day and to a l i those who donatcd
food to the banquet.
Members of the dance group,
orchestra and choir also deserve
special tribute as do the various
soloists whö took part in the pro
gram. A great many people con-tributed
to the success of the day.
Matti Saari in his remarks gave
a deep and thorough outline of Ka­levala
and its meaning to Finnish
people everywhere. He pointed
out examples of the close relation-ship
that Kalevala has had w i th
the building of B. C. Kalevala has
always been a source of strength
and inspiration to the Finnish-Can-adian
pioneers of B. C.

historical situations in which Kale­vala
has played an important role.
Speaking finally on the search
for Canadian culture he said: "Such
as Lönnrot, Sibelius and other
great minds of Finland turned to
Kalevala, to the past, for the ins
pirations upon which they built Fin­nish
culture, SO must Canadians
turri to the past, to the rich cultural
heritages of the people who built
our country and British Columbia.
Only from the past can we gain a
real picture of what we are like
and how our thoughts and ideas
should be expressed in music, art,
etc."

Onneksi Florencella, saapui kirje,
joten osastomme pääsi taas tällä
viikolla päivän valoon. Kiitos kir-'
jeestäsi, Florence.
Setä ihmetteli kun Florence ker­toi,
että sielläpäin oli melko ankara
talvi. Täällä Sudburyn alueella on
tavallisesti melko ankara talvi ja
lunta ja pakkasta aivan riittämiin,
mutta nyt näinä päivinä päättyvä
talvi on ollut tavallista leudompi.
Lunta on tullut tavallista vähem­män
ja suuri osa siitä on jo sulanut
ja pahoja'pakkasia ei ollut lainkaan.
Setä ei edes paleluttanut korviaan
tai nenäänsä tänä talvena, joten hy­vin
kaikki on mennyt.
Maaliskuu lähestyy loppua ja pian
tulee se April-päivä, j o l l o in on lupa
narrata kaveriaan. Eihän muulloin
pitäisi ketään narrata. April-päivä
on siinä suhteessa poikkeus. Eng­lannin
kielellä se on A p r i l Fools
Day ja tämän maan lavat kai edel­lyttävät,
että nenästä vetämiset on
toimitettava ennen puoltapäivää.
Ja pian tulee pääsiäinen, jolloin
kaikki koululaiset voivat nauttia 10
päivän pääsiäislomasta. Silloin^ on
kevät jo kaikkialla ja voimme naut­tia
kevään ihanuuksista.
Kyllä kevät on jo saapunut.Sud-buryyn,
vaikka toisinaan tulee vä­hän
lunta, sillä pikkupoikien taskut
'on pullollaan "marble"-palloja ja
se on aina varma merkki kevään tu­losta.
Tytöt eivät vielä kulje hyppy-nuorat
