The annual meeting of the F i n ­nish,
Canadian Amateur Sports
Federation was held Aug. 7, 1961
at the Finnish Hall, Sudbury, Ont.
and from the Reports given by the
various member clubs it appears
artivities are on the upward trend.
Selected as chairmen for the
meeting were A. Widgren and U .
Penttinen and as secretaries P.
Vaurio and W. Rönkä. ;
A report was read on the "Suur-juhlas"
held in 1960'at South Por-cupine
in which 91 athletes and
gymnasts had parlicipated.
The minutes of this meeting are
to be written in Finnish and mi-meographed
copies will be sent
to each member club.
U.Penttinen reported on the
Finnish Canadian Ski Association
and mentioned last year's cham-pionship
meet had been held at
Port Arthur sponsored by Elo and
Isku ACs.
K. Lehto, honorary and charter
member of Yritys A.C., which is
55 years old, was present as an
Observer and treated ali official
representatives at the meeting to
a lunch at Työn Puisto.
Official reprensentatives of the
various clubs then gave verbal re-ports
on their past year's acti-vities.

W. Rönkä of Beaver Lake Jehu
indicated that skiing is their main
interest but that last winters lack
of snow curtailed it. Their recent
track and field meet was a success
and their membership has in-creased.
I t was unanimously decided to
support "The Canadian Committee
for the Control of Radiation Ha-zards"
and that everything pos-sible
should be doneby each club
to further the advancement of
peaceful relations by ali countries
of the World.
Helsinki will be the host in the
summer of 1962 of the World
Youth Congress.lt was recommen-ded
that steps should be taken to
send representatives there to par-ticipate
and that ali clubs and
Finnish Organization locals would
assist towards this end.
Discussions took place on the
co-opetration between the Sports
Federation and other organizations
such as the Finnish Organization.
Canadian Ski Federation, Amateur
Athletic Union, T U L in Finland
and others, and good relations are
to be continued.
Next year's "SuurjulasV are to
be at Port Arthur on the civic
holiday weenkend.
. - This year's merit awards went

Rönkä Jehu A.C. and Jack
Hymander, Alerts A.C. Two other
nominees were Eini Kaarela Isku
and Elsie Jokinen, Yritys A. C.
whose names will/appear on next
year's recommendation.
A Special award of $50.00 and
a letter of appreciation from the
Federation went to Paavo Vouti­lainen
for excepUonal work in the
past. ;„

the Federation, said a few words
in appreciation of the good work
done by ali the clubs and of the
splendid turnout and sportsman-ship
of the athletes and gymnasts.

lt's Äll Over But the Sliouting
The heat of the Juhla excitement has subsided ^^=^ery-one
has gone home—and anöther wonderful festival is over.
Surely ali the 3,000 spectators experienced a heartwarm-ing
leeling of joy in listeriing to the massed choirs,~m watch-in
the sports events, in seeing. beautiful young gymnasts and
dancers. That feeling of unity that comes with a sense of
cooperation in participation, when everyone is trying his
best to make the Juhla a success! Everyone felt it — it was
in the air — at the track, at the hali, in the theatre. Even
the Saturday afternoon rain did not dampen the enthusiasm
generated by good v/ill and cameradie. People crowded the
hali for the play and for.all three dances, and the theatre
:wäs chuck full for the best festival concert ever, there was
certainlyenough for everyone to see and do!
A vote of thanks to ali participants and particularly, to
the hard-working Sudbury people!
This Juhla will be a memorable one for another reason.
In the midst of our Sunday programme the startling news
of Titov's cosmic achievement came over the loudspeaker.
A new wave of excitement stirred the already excited crowd,
as they heard the news of yet another^^of man's accomplish-ments
over nature. It was truly a good day, Aug. 6, 1961 — a
day to revel in being alive and part of the human race.

to the various trophies in cir-culation.

younger members was recommen­ded
and such methods for gaining
experience as courses, discussions
and as assistants at actual meets
was suggested. '

a very permanent, large, dependable,

Luoteis-Kiinan Pohjoiseen
Jäämereen, on valmis liikennöitä­väksi
ensi vuonna sen jälkeen, kun
Buhtarminskin vesivoimalaitoksella
Kazakstanissa valmistuva sulku­portti
otetaan käytäntöön. Tämä
sulkulaite tulee nostamaan maan
alukset 67 metrin korkeuteen.
Luoteis-Kiinasta tulevat alukset
kulkevat Tshernyi-Irtysh jokea
myöten Buhtarminskin säännöste-lyaltaan
kautta Irtysh-jokeen. Tämä
laskee siperialaiseen Ob-jokeen, jo­ka
virtaa etaelästä pohjoiseen Kara-mereen
Arktikassa.
Ajatus tämän vesireitin avaami­sesta
