kanssa pyytäen häntä tulemaan
Winnipegiin tätä eläintä hoitamaan;
Tri Milne päätti kuitenkin, että on
parempi jos sonni tuodaan Guelphiin
hoidettavaksi;: Niin pantiin valkoi­nen
sonni kuorma-autoon ja se tuo­tiin,
tämän, 1,300 mailia, pitkän mat-kan
pysähtymättä Guelphiin. Matka
kesti kaikkiaan 36 tuntia.
• Sonnille oli suoritettava leikkaus ja.
viimeisimmät tiedot -osoittavat, että
sonnin tila on tyydyttävä. Sen täy­tyy
kuitenkin.oUa: nelisen kuukautta

. What is religion? Let us define
our terms before we begin talking
about this somewhat confusing- and
verypersonalsubject. Religion has
been defined as "the attitude of in-dividuals
in community to the pow-ers
AVhieh^they coneieve as. having
ultimate. control over theirdestinies
and interests". By a very careful
analysis of; this definition (which
may-not be complete by-anymeans
but; let':us;;commence somewhere)
this appears to involve .the three
main functions of the mind —
knowing feeling and willing. By
this defin^ion: of; religion; mere
passivevbelief is not enough • (i.e.
one who thinks that he is religious
butvdoes not practice any of' these
rites), ali three areessential simul-taniously.
There is also an object
(usually): upon which the feelings
and rites can be performed, and
there mustvbe a mental desire and
WrLLingness; that a certain result
be accomplished by the practice
of full belief and the rites or pro-gramme
or ceremony. We are get-ting
ahead of ourselves; a little
history first.
Early mari does not begin with
definite. beliefs in immaterial or
supernatural vthings. ;Even to-day
our pscliycologists can teli us (as
can you for yourself if you are ^ oh-servant
about, your own: feelings)
that the unknowhor the temporap
rily unexplainable is feared, :especr
ially if it is of such a magnitude
as to be uncontrollable bythe view-er.
Witness the fear of even hungry,
animals in the woods to-fire; but
as any observant woodsman, hunter
or fisherman can testify, also wit-ness
their fascination by it. Life
even now, and even moreso for the
primative man, was a series of days
filled with constant danger and
dread. At any moment sudden
death might strike from some
known enemy (animals, other
ti-ibesmen etc.) or, even more mys-teriously;
.by some unknown cause
or; enemy (discase,lightning',flood
fire-etc.) With this constajit pres-sure
and dread pressing upon liim
at ali timesv he .would naturally
grasp at any strw vvhich might
afford a possibility of ease from
his troubles, or an aid or ally a
gainstevil.forces. The first concept
seems to: have been one of dividing
the supernatursil or unknovvn forces
into evil ones and neutral ones.
This would tend to indicate that
the idea of a good spirit or aiding
spiritcamelater; His first thoughts
wouldbetowardsavoiding the hap­pening
of iijunfortunate events by
appeasing or fearing acts; rather
than the active: performance of: any
rites.to have something-ifavourable
come about.
This fear or belief seehis firstly
to; have. appeared as an vunknovvn;
all-prevading force; with. no shape
or distinguished: form; much as we
might to-day think about whencon-cieving-
magnetism. We.; think that a
force is present becaus6 we can see
that outside objects are affectcd
by its presence, even at a distance;
it is an invisible force; and up un-til
this date no completely satis-fying
explanation for magnetism
has been given. Yet still we be-lieve
that it is there. Try to project
this same idea into the mind of a
primitive man, but also inject the
idea of a monstrouä size which
might at any moment or at a whim
turn upon him to destroy him or
his belongings. The idea of fear
must be also introduced.
,Possibly by coincidence, it was
noticed ihat when certain fears
appeared at their-strongest; possilK
ly vyhen under attack' by others
or by animals, or when an epi-demicof
disea.se^struck; some co-incidental
act may take place which
cöincides vvitlrlhe tuVn of the battle-or
the frightening of the beasts
or Ole pa,s.sing'of the crisis in a
sickness. Man appears to be an
axpcrimental animal with a me-mory
for pragmatic practice. That
s, if 'a -desired- result-is-obtained
by doing a certain act, the memory
wiU-jog-that-person into doing a
similajn act or rite when a similar
occasionor: danger orrequirement
arises. It is suggested that-Pav-lov's
experiment in conditioned re-flexes
may have some substantiat-ing
bearing on this, and it is hoped
that we may cover this topic at
some time in the near; future. How-ever,
the memory of success from
a certain act will remain and be
practiced again.

the spirit. A good example
would bcrthe. Indian:swasitka. The
symbol or •: f et ish , was only :a short.
time from the embodiment of the
spirit m an idol or totein. The
medecine man lost no time in mak-ing
himself proclaimed the idol-tender
or totem-tender. By further
complicating the rituals, he was
making himself more indespensable
ali the time, since only he or his
servants could 1 remember ali the
propersteps to be taken in the i'it-ual.
As soon as the idol or toteni came
into exislence it pensonified the
m.
power or, spirit or god, and it was
reasoned_ that gifts made to the
idol or_totem would appease its
anger or better call on its aid if
these gifts were valuable. The
only 'real sense of value • would be
that; which was valuable :or desire-;
able to the primitive man hinVself:
Thcrefore prized cereals, objects
of the hunti even;:human life-sacri-fices
were offered to the spirits.
It is no; coincidence that; the priest
class,prospered from, this timC; on.
The.priesthood increasingly.com-plicated
the' rituals making their
presence imperatve^ at ali religious
"occasions and thus perpetuating •
their jobs. The priesthoodretained
to itself the educating of ali new
priests.and; the choice of prospect-ivecandicates.;
Theyrealizedv early
that education and knowledge were,
synonymous with. power, and they
increasingly took over the reins
of ali educatibnal-facilities. Their
Special biases and p r e j u d i G e s w e r e'
easily introduced into the educa-tional
exercises.
A further system of control was
introduced 'and maintainedby:the.
exercise of a series of taboos or
tabus — the forbidden. These ta-bus
\vere often introduced with a
very desirable social end, siich as
tiie tabu against eating pork
amongst certain peoplcs. It had

yoars \vo \vill bc cclebrating the Centennial Anniversary of
"our home and native land."'
Wc believe this 100 year birlhday will be a very different
lype of celebration than we are u.sed to on Canada Day. First
we see it as a real poople's demonstration of "free patriot
love." We are certain the stuffed shirts, regardlcss of cur-rent
plans, will have to take a back seat — a way, way back
— on thai day.
We believe thai us 'Canadians by that time will have
shaken off the impeding shackles of foreign domination (U.S.
that is) and give real meaning to Sir Wilfred Laurier's words
"the twentieth cenlury belongs to Canada."
We believe also that Canadians vvill not allovv the rest
of the World lo \vork for a peaceful, disarmed World jusl on
their behalf so they can have a wonderful 100-year birlhday
celebration, but will lake up Ihe slruggle and give the leader-ship
Ihey should in this good fighl. When one Ihinks about
it, vvhat nation more/Ihan Canada, needs, wants, just has to
have a^ peaceful world in which lo flourish and grow into
the greal country il can be. What country has a more — yes
— selfish — intercsl in peace than Canada to make com­pletely
sure thai ai its impending lOOlh and even the 200lh
and 300lh birlhday, there will be humanily on this earlh.

asioihin en ole vielä ehtinyt tutus­tua,
Katsokaapas kun se on tiedet­tä
ja tieteeseen perehtyminen oh
hiukan vaikeaa jokapäiväisen työn
keskellä. Mutta toivon kuitenkin,
että sitäkin puolta voisin käsitellä'
koska juhlat ovat mahtavat ja sa­malla
harvinaiset, että kyllä kan­nattaa
vähän kansan puolesta mie^
tiä.
Olin keskusteluissa juhlavarinto-lakomitean
henkilöiden kanssa "ja-mikäli
heiltä kuulin, he ovat otta- '
neet kerrassaan suuren taakan har-;li-;
lioilleen. Niinpä kaikkien ihuiden , j
paistien ja liemiruokien lisäksi he
\almistavat juhlapäiväksi kalkkutfa> -
päivällisen. .Kokemultsestatiedäm;;/^
me että kalkkuna on oikeata juhla- .
ruokaa ja sitä tullaan tarjoilemaan
juuri Suurjuhlan yhteydessä.
Ainoa puoli täsSä ravin^toasiaska
on se, että nykyaikana ei sentillä "

ja ruokintakustannusten
koi'keuden vuoksi ei kannata yrit­tääkään
kilpailla ulkoa tulevain
ki^mssa.
Rohkaisevana on kuitenkin se,
että. niin ifarmarit; kuin: kaupunkien
työläisetkin ovat omaksuneet tais­telun
kannan parempien ansioiden
puolesta. Palkkain korotusvaati-muksia
ovat asettaneet työläiset
