The Liberal Convention
"We'll win next time." With these closing words Liberal
leader Lester Pearson concluded the recently held Liberal
national convention.
^ 'Reflecting the trends of the times, the Liberals have
moved farther to the left than with any previous program
they had ever formulated. Being largely a reform program
embracing sueh ambitious planks as - f uU employment, a
A\ national health insurance scheme, free university education
for large number of students and partial withdrawal from
NORAD it is bound to be attractive to a large number of
Canadian people. ~^
^ ^he läst two federal elections really rocked the very
foundatipns of the Liberal party so this reform platform is
; a much needed shotiin the arm for the sagging morale of
• the rank and file Libera^l ~ the "grassroots" Liberal.as they
.choose to call them. How much of this platform will be im-plemented
is, of course, another matter.
Looking at the situation objectively, the Liberal Party
needed this reforpi platform badly, to keep from completely
: sinking into oblivioji. That they are very much afraid of the
: New Party making great inroads into the Liberal following
, • goes Avithout saying.
Ali these doings make for a very interesting Canadian
political situation. With the advent of the New Party in the
very near future, and the prospects.för a federal election at
least for next year, if not already this year, it looks like we're
- in for some lively political battles.
Depending on the international situation as well as the
: Canadian internal situation, who can teli how far to the left
the Canadian voterwill swing come next election. Perhaps
much farther than the three major parties care to advocate.

Even closer to my present home
is the current case of the Winnit>eg
Maroons hockey team who recently
concluded a very successful tour of
Czechoslovakia. Before they left in
December, their prospects looked
pretty bleak even to their Qwn coach-
Ing staff. The defeats suffered by
their counterpart Chatham Maroons
in the U.SJSJI. had made pessimists
you dear readers may also take this of everyone. The City of Wlnnipeg
as a promlse, or a warning, whlch-jver
you prefer.
As the date line at the top of this
jolumn indicates. I have once again
changed provinces. This makesfive
in the past seven years. This has
given me - an unexcelled opportunity
:o view the Canadian scene, and
even a better chance for dodging bill
coUectors. I am particularly glad to
je In Winnipeg because it is current-y
the track and field centre of Can­ada
and should rank favourably
with; even the large citles south of
the border, now that a natlve son
in the form of Jim Daly has been
elected chairman of track and field
for the Amateur Athletic Union of
Canada.
Needless to say, I^have no actual
club news to report so my efforts
will be limited to personal observa-tions
of current events. :
We have heard a lot lately about
ihe sad State of Canadian' athletic
endcavours, especially in light of the
5howing made at the recent Olympic
Games. Plans and suggestions of
various types have been proposed by
iildlviduals and organlzations alike
wlth the purpose _of raising our stan-dards
to brlng them on a par with
other nations pf equiyalent popu-latlon.
To my mind uiost of these
schemes . are ' "crash" programmes
intended for immediate results.
Athletes are not ripe; for harvesting
like fruit on a tree. They require
expert care and handllng. Pressure
should certainly be brought to bear
on governments, both federal. and
provincial. to pian and finance long
term athletic training in the ama­teur
field. There Is however much
that. can be doneby.lndlviduals, even
thosevho do not want to, or cannot
affordi to dig into their pockets for
hard cash.
One of the biggest aids to an ama­teur
athlete is encouragement. To
hear people say "good work" after
winning, and ^'good try" after losing,
takes the place of the pay cheque
extended to the pros. What is most
mystifying is that these words are
more often freely extended to the
professionals than to the amateurs,
although the latter make €he real
sacrifices of their own time and mo­ney.
I read a short news Item recently
which sald that a young Southern
Ontario man had won the national
combined gymnastlc champlonshlp
of Mexico. The spectators watching
his performance gave him a standlng
ovatlon when the results were an-nounced,
and afterwards 'treated him
like a hero. The article went on to
State that upon his return to Can­ada,
there was not a single person
was asked for flnanclal support and
the request was turned down on the
grounds that money for such causes
had been exhausted by a donation to
the Police Plpe Band to take them
to the Grey Cup game. The press
and. radio certainly dld not help
matters by writing off the Maroons
as losers before they even had their
bags backed. The team members had
no choice but to foot the bill them-
•selves and liaten to gloomy predlc-tions.

Weil, as everyone knows, the Win-nipeg
Maroons had a successful tour
of Czechoslovakia — and that is an
undestatement. With each new vic-tory,
the space devoted to the Ma­roons
in the local sports pages and
newscasts grew and grew. At the
return of flnal results, even the City
cf Winnipeg dimbed on the band-wagon
and ahnounced they woiild
honour the team with a civic dinner.

What it ali boils down to is that
there are a lot of hypocrits 'promo-ting"
amateur sports. They dont
want a country full of eager athletes
and healthy people..What they want
are winners! How about it gang?
Next time you see someone tum in
a good effort in amateur sport, how
about going out of your way to con-gratulate

Sudbury. — I guess it is High
time Alerts AC does some repört-ing
to the Club News. Wehaveii't
been inactive, as a matter* ot fact
we were very active until the
Christmas season and for the holi-days
took a little respite only to
get back into harness with re-newed
vim and vigor for the com­ing
year.
At our first meeting of this year
a committee of 12 people~was elect­ed
to represent the Alerts on the
"Suurjuhla"-committee, for tUft
coming summer's big event which
will be held inSudbury. This event
warrants plenty of. publicity but I
shall leave it for now~and let the
committee handle that.
We also decided to hold our
annual meeting on Sunday Feb-ruary
5th at 2 o'ciock in the a£-
ternoon and the girls will look
after the serving of coffee. Ali new
and old members. are"'invited.
It was also decided that we will
have a monster Bingo on Thurs­day,
February 9th.
Skiing was discussed and a re­port
was heard that we have two
skiers who will possibly go to the
Port Arthur ski meet.
