THE NIGHT BEFORE
CHRISTMAS
By C L E : M E N T C. M O O RE
'T-icas the night bejorc Christmas zvken ali through
the hou:
Not a creature u-as stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings ucrc hung by the chimney wHh care,
In hopes that Saint Xicholas soon would bc therc.
The children Tvcrc ncstlcd ali snug in their bcds,
IV hile visions of sugarplions dcnccd in their hcads.
And Mamma in hr kerchicj and I in my cap,
Ifad just scttlcd our brains for a long 'urinter's nap.
Whcn out on the laivn thcrc arose such a clattcr,
I sprang jrom viy bcd to see u-hat ivas the matter.
A'iir\ay to the 'ivindo-iO I }lew Itke a jlash,
Tore open the shuttcrs and threw up the sash.
The mooii ön the brcast oj the nciv-jall-cn snou',
Cave the luster oj midday to objccts bcloTi'.
Wkcn, what to my 'ivondcrin-^ cycs should appcar,
But a miniaturc slcigh, and eight tiny reindecr,
With a little old drivcr so lively and quick
I kneiv in a motncnt it must be Saint Nick.
More rapid than eaglcs his coursers thcy camc,
And he ivhistled and shoutcd, and called them by naine.
"Saiv, Dasherl Xow, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixcn
On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch, to the to^ of the 'wall!
Sow, dash away, dash away, dash away, ali!"
As dry Uaves that bejore the -,vild hurricane jly
IVhen they meet 'ä.'ith an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the housetop the coursers they fleu'
With the slcigh fuU oj toys ond Saint Nicholas too.
And thcn, in a twinkling, I keard on the roof
The prancing and paiving of each little hoof.
As I dre'iV in my head and laas turning around.
Dou>rt-the~chi-mney- .Saint Nicholas came uuth a boitnd.
He 'ivas dressed ali in fnr from his head to his foot,
And his clothes xvere ali tarnished ivith ashes and soot;
A bundlc of toys he had fhing on his hack,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes, how they tminkled! His dimples so merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry;
His droll little viouth was draivn up like a bow,
And the beard on his chin ivas as white as the snow.
The stump oj a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smokc it encircled kis head like a wreath;
He had a broad jace and a little round belly
That shook, when he laughed, like a boivljul oj jelly.
He ivas chubby and plump, a right jolly old elj;
And I laughed ivhen I saw him, in spite oj mysclj.
A ivink oj his cyc and a twist oj his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
He spokc not a Tvord, but ivent straight to his work,
And jillcd ali the stockings, thcn turned ivith a jerk.
And laying kis jinger, asidc oj his nose,
And givingan nod, up the chinincy he rosc.
He sprang to his slcigh, to his tcam gave a ivhistle
And away thcy ali jldu like the douinona^thistle.
But, / hcard him cxclaim as ho drovc out pf sight,
"Happy Christmas to ali,
and to ali a good night!"
FOR CHRISTMAS
N Oli) not a window sntall or big
But 'ivcars a urcath oj hölly sprig;.
Nor any shop too poor to show
Its spray oj pine or mistlctoe.
Now city airs are spicy-swcet
lVith Christmas trees along each st reet,
Green sprucc and jir whosc boughs still hold
Their tinscl balls and jruits oj gold.
Now postmen pass in ihrees of jours
Like bent, blue-coated Santa Claus.
Noiv feoplc hurry to and jro
\Vith little girls and boys in to-iv,
And not a child but kceps some trace
Oj Christmas sccrcts in his jace.

Hampurilainen kustannusliike, jch.
tajanaan Ernst Rowohll, järjesti äskettäin
työntekijäin marssin läpi kaupungin
houkutellakseen yleisön ostamaan
kirjoja. Marssijat kantoivat a-slaankuuluvia
julisteita. Kirjakauppiaat
ovat kaupungissa joutuneet ahtaalle,
koska väestö ei pysty ostamaan
paljon kirjoja. Tuskin tämä mielen-osoituskulkuekaan
tai samaan aikaan
järjestetty kirjanäyttely ovat saaneet
paljon parannusta aikaan, kertoo uutinen.
