Tääl lä takamailla eleli ennen taitava hiilenpolttaja, joka laitteli suuria sysimiiluja ikorpeen: Täällä liän eleli yksikseen hiljaista elämäänsä. Sama niies pystytti tämänkin miilun ja hloiteii sitä useita viikkoja, kunnes aika lähestyi, jolloin miilu pitil purettaman. Vähää ennen sitä sattui kuitenkin harvinainen tapaus takamailla; Eräänä iltana ajoi Santalan torpan pihaan komeat vaunut ja parihevoset. Sellaisia ei ennen oltu täällä nähty. 1 Uteliaana kerääntyi torpan väki vaunujen ympärille. Vauniikista nousi venäläinen varusmestari kahden sotilaan saattanuma. ITeilUi oli, inukanaan raskaita rahalippaita. Tämä tapahtui toisena sota-vuonna 1809. Venäläinen varusmestari oli matkalla Lahdesta Hä m een l i nu aan m u k a lui a n r ah o j a Hämeenlinnassa ma jaiievil le sotajoukoille. He olivat kuulleet Lahdessa mainittavan oikotiestä Hämeenlinnaan. Jo Vesalan kylästä läh- \ m \ he kyselivät iätä oikotietä. Tie oi i kafiea, k i v i n en ja kuoppainen. Matka sujui senvuoksi sangen hitaasti. Varusmestari alkoi jo kerran epäillä petosta ja lialusi Nahkahampaan niityn kohdalla kä ä nty ä ta kaisi n pä i n. Mut. ta oppaat vakuuttivat tien para-nevaj), kunhan päästään Jiieman eteenpäin. Kulkue saapui sitten Sa nt a la u torppaan, jossa yöpyi. alutta oppaat eivät nukkuneetkaan. Aamun vaijetes.-tia läksi joukkue taas matkalle. Hiilenpolttaja yhtyi heihin.—'Kun he tulivat- suon kohdalle, murhasivat oppaat kir-veillä varusuiestarin ja sotilaat— vaunut ja hevoset upotettiin .suohon, raha lippaat jäivät heidän saaliikseen. ' Kulkurimiehet läksivät heti pötkimään omille teilleen, annettuaan hiilenpolttajalle palkkion. Mutta hiilenpolttaja jäi rauhallisesti sysimiilunsa ääreen, joka jo alkoi olla valmis purettavaksi.: Venäläiset eivät kuitenkaan jättäneet asiaa sikseen, vaan ryhtyi-vät tarmokkaasti etsimään matkalla kadonneita. Heidän epäluulonsa kohdistuivatkin tähän seutuun. Jäljet johtivat metsään, aivan sysimiilun lähelle ja sieltä 'suolle. Kun hiilenpolttaja eräänä varhaisena aamuna juuri aikoi pur^ kaa miilunsa, tulivat paikalliset viranomaiset vangitsemaan liäntä. Hänet 'vietiin Hämeenlinnan vankilaan. - ' Tästä pelästyivät paikkakuntalaiset. He pelkäsivät ankaria toimenpiteitä venäläisten: puolelta, jos. hiilimies kertoisi koko tapauksen. Senvuoksi lähettivät he myrkytettyä ruokaa hänelle vankilaan. Hiilenpolttaja, joka ehkä oli yähiminän syyllinen rikok-sellisista, kuoli syötyään ruuan." . Sysimiilu jäi purkamatta. Siinä se törröttää vieläkin ja niuis-tuttaa. jä 1 kimaailmalle kaameasta teosta. Ei kukaan: ole halunnut siihen koskea, vaikka se sisältääkin suuren joukon hyviä hiiliä. Torpanmies lopetti kertomuksensa, katsellen epäluuloisena miilua. Hongat humisivat ikuista lauluaan. Suonsilmästä huokui kosteata usvaa. Erämaan salaperäinen, käsittämätön rauha levisi yli seudun. raavaa päivänä rokotettiin varmuuden vuoksi kaikki kolmannen luokan matkustajat. Samana- päivänä lähdettiin Englannista Ranskaan, missä Cherbonrgin kaupunkiin jätettiin ranskalaisia ?natkustajia^ Sieltä palattiin L i - vcrpooliin,_ missä ilmoitettiin meidän saavan odottaa ainakin 4 päivää,; ennenkuin päästäisiin jatkamaan - matkaa. 'Kuitenkin pääsimme Cunard-linjan vuokraamalla Smolensk-laivalla Hul-lista Göteborgiin. Seikkailu Ruotsissa. So osa siirtolaisista, jonka aikomuksena oli alun-pit.- ien matkustaa Ruotsin kautta, oli leimauttanut asianmukaisesti passinsa New Yorkissa. Venäläinen varusmestari oli matkalla Lahdesta Hä m een l i nu aan m u k a lui a n r ah o j a Hämeenlinnassa ma jaiievil le sotajoukoille. He olivat kuulleet Lahdessa mainittavan oikotiestä Hämeenlinnaan. Jo Vesalan kylästä läh- \ m \ he kyselivät iätä oikotietä. Tu 1 tua a n Ivos k en k irk o 1 le, ly ö tt ä-ytyi kaksi jniestä heille oppaiksi. ]\ li e h e t a a vi sti va t ^ e 11 ä A- e nä 1 ä i s i 1- lä. oli rahoja mukanaan ja johdat tivat- heidät kauas takamaille, aivan toiseen suuntaan kuin Hämeenlinnan oikotie. Tie oi i kafiea, k i v i n en ja kuoppainen. Matka sujui senvuoksi sangen hitaasti. Varusmestari alkoi jo kerran epäillä petosta ja lialusi Nahkahampaan niityn kohdalla kä ä nty ä ta kaisi n pä i n. Mut. ta oppaat vakuuttivat tien para-nevaj), kunhan päästään Jiieman eteenpäin. Kulkue saapui sitten Sa nt a la u torppaan, jossa yöpyi. alutta oppaat eivät nukkuneetkaan. Ile hiipivät metsään, missä liiil enpoltta ja hoi t eli sysi miilu-aan, ja kertoivat : hänelle suunnattomista raha-aarteista sekä aikeistaan anastaa ne. lile saivat hiilenpolttajan viekotelluksi puo-" 1 elleen. Lie 1 ujiasiva t liänellekin 0'an saaliista. Kauhallinen hiilen-p oi 1.1 aja k u A'i 11 e 1 i pia n o m i s t a Va n r. sa suuren rikkauden ja yhtyi miesten tuumaan. Hän tunsi metsät ja suot paremmin kuin yks-i kään. Hän tiesi tuon m e t s ä n taka na olevan, suunnattoman, pohjat tonia n Herassuon; joka voi kät keä ja säilyttää salaisuuksia. Aamun vaijetes.-tia läksi joukkue taas matkalle. Hiilenpolttaja yhtyi heihin.—'Kun he tulivat- suon kohdalle, murhasivat oppaat kir-veillä varusuiestarin ja sotilaat— vaunut ja hevoset upotettiin .suohon, raha lippaat jäivät heidän saaliikseen. ' Kulkurimiehet läksivät heti pötkimään omille teilleen, annettuaan hiilenpolttajalle palkkion. Mutta hiilenpolttaja jäi rauhallisesti sysimiilunsa ääreen, joka jo alkoi olla valmis purettavaksi.: Venäläiset eivät kuitenkaan jättäneet asiaa sikseen, vaan ryhtyi-vät tarmokkaasti etsimään matkalla kadonneita. Heidän epäluulonsa kohdistuivatkin tähän seutuun. Jäljet johtivat metsään, aivan sysimiilun lähelle ja sieltä 'suolle. Kun hiilenpolttaja eräänä varhaisena aamuna juuri aikoi pur^ kaa miilunsa, tulivat paikalliset viranomaiset vangitsemaan liäntä. Hänet 'vietiin Hämeenlinnan vankilaan. - ' Tästä pelästyivät paikkakuntalaiset. He pelkäsivät ankaria toimenpiteitä venäläisten: puolelta, jos. hiilimies kertoisi koko tapauksen. Senvuoksi lähettivät he myrkytettyä ruokaa hänelle vankilaan. Hiilenpolttaja, joka ehkä oli yähiminän syyllinen rikok-sellisista, kuoli syötyään ruuan." . Sysimiilu jäi purkamatta. Siinä se törröttää vieläkin ja niuis-tuttaa. jä 1 kimaailmalle kaameasta teosta. Ei kukaan: ole halunnut siihen koskea, vaikka se sisältääkin suuren joukon hyviä hiiliä. Torpanmies lopetti kertomuksensa, katsellen epäluuloisena miilua. Hongat humisivat ikuista lauluaan. Suonsilmästä huokui kosteata usvaa. Erämaan salaperäinen, käsittämätön rauha levisi yli seudun. raavaa päivänä rokotettiin varmuuden vuoksi kaikki kolmannen luokan matkustajat. Samana- päivänä lähdettiin Englannista Ranskaan, missä Cherbonrgin kaupunkiin jätettiin ranskalaisia ?natkustajia^ Sieltä palattiin L i - vcrpooliin,_ missä ilmoitettiin meidän saavan odottaa ainakin 4 päivää,; ennenkuin päästäisiin jatkamaan - matkaa. 'Kuitenkin pääsimme Cunard-linjan vuokraamalla Smolensk-laivalla Hul-lista Göteborgiin. Seikkailu Ruotsissa. So osa siirtolaisista, jonka aikomuksena oli alun-pit.- ien matkustaa Ruotsin kautta, oli leimauttanut asianmukaisesti passinsa New Yorkissa.
