in a colorful spectacle dedicated to
peace. Here in Hungarj' mrhen youth
plays ho5t to young peace fighters of
the World, the government is at their
•ervice. No request is too great. The
students and young work€rs. with
ali the working people. pilot the Hun-
?arian ship of state with a respcnsi-billty
and measured optimism which
injected the buoyancy of true freedom
nto their guests.
As the Canadians left th?lr bus
their hands were clasped warmly by
the people of Budapest who vere
?'.ad to see Canada represented in
the camp of peace.
In the stadium assembled youth
from the spirlt-stlrrlng New Etemo-cracies
of Eastern Europe — the
Rumanians dancirg as thsy went,
Czechoslovaks, Bulgarians. Albanlans
and peoples of the Sovlet Union;
youth determined on peace from the
western countrles; colonial young
people from Viet Nam and Indonesia
who are fighting for ihdependence;
and youth from the fasclst-oppressed
countries such as Spain and Greece.
Each delegation. announcsd as it
came over the rise and down the
Stone steps into the stadium, drew
new rounds of cheers and app"ause.

Later. with the doves long
dlspersed, low flying planes "buzzed"
the huge assemblage and millions of
flower petals fluttered to earth. In

stock-piling of atom bombs goes on.

Here, there could be no room for
doubt or suplcion. We Canadians
know that thrse young men and
womsn stand for peace, come what
may.
A feature of the ceremony was the
arrival of a reläy carrying the f lag
brought from Bulgaria and Rumanla,
another from Scotland by way of
England. France, Belgium, Italy and
Austria, and third flag message from
the peace-loving youth of Finland.
Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Poland
and Czechoslovakia.

Federation of Trade Unions, Prantl-sek
Zupka said. "the WFTU can
mobilize today over 71 million mem-bers
in 47 countrles. Thls force is still
growing... Your Worid Festival
proves also the great strengthening of
the peace-loving camp of piogress."
In his speech of welcome, Arpad
Szaka.sits, president of the Hungarian
Repiibllc called for a meeting. of youth
that will "strengthen the front of
peace and the ideal of the friendship
cf peoples. We know that the pro-gressive
and clear-minded youth of
the westem countries are also re-oognizing
the truth of this Ide^. I

from these lands."
Speaking of the youth of Viet Nam,
Greece and Indonesia, the president
said he "could not wish anythlng
better than that they «hould foUow

Alerts Atliletes Won
the Sundiioim Cup
Slnce the "liittojuhla" there has
been a noticeable slackening of actlvJ-ties
on the part of the Alerts. We
did managc to hold a track and field
meet In conjunction wJth the r i n n l sh
Organt2ation's annual Summer Festi­val,
but the partlcipation at this meet
was disappointingly small. Ei-en our
neighbojr clubs. the Beaver Lake
Jehu and Whiteflsh Speed. neglected
to send so much as a single athlete
to compete and the Alerts itself could
barely scrape together a few partlci-pants.
Possibly this meet followcd
too closely on the heels of the "liitto­juhla"
to attract enough attention.
However, the Alerts has pepped up
conslderably since then. and was able
to field two groups the other week-end.
one of whlch was sent to take
part in a meet at South Porcupine.
the other competing at Whitefish.
Incidentally, this latter team cap-turcd
the Sundholm Cup with a total
of 1195.68 points to Jehu's 1156.08 and
Speed's 971.58 points.
One feature of this summer*s track
and field meets around Sudbury has
been the large proportion of youngs-ters
competing in the under 17, under
15 and under 12 age groups. This is
very gratlfying, as attempts to draw
these age groups into the Federation's
activities have not been very success-ful
until now. Quite a few of these
youngsters show a great deal of pro-mise,
and should develop into out-standing
athletes, especially with
some coaching. Therefore, our clubs
shoiild lay more stress on tjje part
played by these younger members in
our activities and give them every
opportunity to improve their .abilities
within the clubs.
This column doesn't generally glve
äny one club member special recog-nition
fOinhis or her work, as ali club
members are expected to do their
shäre. However, an exception to the
rule is sometimes necessary in a case
where someone has done such an out^
standing Job as to set an example for
others. The Alerts wlshes to extend
thanks to Dolores Vuori for her im-tiring
efforts on behalf of our club.
In addition to being in the gym llne-up
and the competitlon gymnastic
group for the past few years, she has
been an assistant gym instructor slnce
last fall. This has ali been in addi­tion
to her Bhare in concerts and
other activities at the hali. We hope
to have Miss Vuori agaln helping
wlth the glrls gym now that she is
back from a short danclng noursc at
Jacob's Pillow; New York.
An Alerts general membership
meeting will be heid shortly, ofice our
various commlttees have prepared
their reports from the "liittojuhla".
An announcement of the time and
place will be made i n this paper when
the date is finally set. Lefs have a

todetaan neuvoston asiaa koskevassa

Lukuisat työttömät ovat jo tähän

varattomien työläisten lukumäärä
kasvaa alituisesti. Heinäkuun aikana

Nykyään katsoja voi nähdä mielei­sensä
elokuvan kirkkaana, aurinkoi­sena
päivänä paljaan taivaan alla tai
huoneist05.sa, Jonka ikkunat ovat auki.
-Tämä väite saattaa monesta tuntua
vähemmän uskottavalta. Elokuva-nauhalle
kiinnitettyjen kuvien projl-solm
nenhan on — kuten tähän ns;t
öITotaksuttu — mahdollista vain täy­dellisen
pimeyden vallitessa. Hei­koinkin
valaistus esityssalissa vaikeut­taa
elokuvan katsomista, sillä kuvat
himmenevät Ja hajaantuvat.
Pälvänvaloelokuvan luomisen ajatus
el ole uusi. Sen ovat menestyksettä
koettaneet vuasisatamme alussa to­teuttaa
belgialainen Insinööri de Mar.
italialainen Ganzinl. ranskalaiset
Poche-vcljekset, saksalainen Zech-mann.
Venäjälläkin oli tehty mielen­kiintoisia
tätä ky.symystä koskevia
esityksiä. Lokakuun Vallankumouk­sen
Jälkeen Neuvostoliitossa oli tehty
yrityksiä täydellistää pälvänvaloelo-kuvia
Ja ryhtyä sellaisten elokuvien
?sittämlseen.
Miten neuvostolainen päivänvalo-elokuva
sitten on Järjestetty ja miten
siinä on* saatu hyvä projisiclnti kirk-kalmmassakln
valaistuksessa?
Elokuvakangas on täydellisesti pi­mennetty.
Sitä ympäröi Joka taholta
valoa läpäisemätön kangas Ja sisältä
musta sametti. Peili, Jossa kotsojat
näkevät valkokankaan, on niinikään
kehystetty mustalla sametilla. Kan­kaan
suoranaista tai väKllistä valais­tusta
ei olisi olemassa Ilman peiliä.
Josta katsojat näkevät kankaan. Ra­kennelman
lyhentämiseksi cn käytet­ty
optlUisla laitteita, Joiden polttoväli
on lyhyt. Rakennelma on siten ly­hentynyt
kolmasosaan entisestään.
Tästä oli tuloksena se. että projektio
oli hyvä kaikille katsojapaikoille.
Neuvostolaisesta pälvänvaloprojek-tlosta
on paljon kirjoitettu lehdistös­sä;
On syntynyt erikoisen päivän-valoelokuvaa
käsittelevä kirjallisuus.
Siitä huolimatta sen viholliset kuiten­kin
Jatkuvasti välttävät, e t t ä päivän-veloelokuva
on mahdottomuus.
Päivänvaloclokuvalalttcldeh pystyt­täminen
on selvästi »soittanut neu-vostola
iscn päivän valoelokuvamcne-telmän
vihollisten vastaväitteiden

olivat usein väittäneet, että kuva

Se tekee elokuvan esittämisen aivan
vaarattomaksi näölle, etkä rasita sitä,
sillä tällöin valalstussuhteet ovat nor­maalit
Ja projektio on laadultaan hy­vä.
Henkilöt. Joiden silmät helpasti
ärtyvät, j a Jotka sen sen vuoksi eivät
voi käydä tavallisissa elokuvanäytän­nöissä
sanovat, ettei päivänvalpclo-kuva
lainkaan haittaa heidän nä­köään.
Yhä useammin päivänvaloelokuvaa
riimitetään myöskin ylelselokuvaksi.
Elokuvien esittäminen on nyttemmin
mahdollista kansanpuisto.ssa, rauta­tievaunussa,
leiripaikalla aurinkoisena
päivänä. Koska pälvänvaloelokuva cl
kaipaa suljettua huoneistoa, katsojat
vapautuvat ikuisiksi ajoiksi pimenne­tyistä
eslty.s.saleista.
Entä pälvänvaloelokuvan edut ope-tussuhtccssa?
Näytännön aikana tu­lee
mahdolliseksi tehdä muistiinpa­noja,
suorltUa piirroksia, käyttää hy­väkseen
