Daniel Pixiades T - By William Stewart (Canadian Scene) — The first European explorer known to have visited the island of Montreal was the French navigator, Jacques Cartier. 1л 1535, during hjs second voyage of exploration, he travelled up the St. Lawrence River by longboat from what now is the location of Quebec City. The first French outpost at Montreal was established only in the next century. Thirty-fou- r years after Quebec was founded in 1608, a Jesuit mission and fur trading station were set up at Montreal by Paul de Chomedy de Maisonneuve. Under the French regime lasting until 1760, Montreal was a slow--growi- ng centre of trade, settle-ment and missionary work. After Canada was ceded to England by the Treaty of Paris, 1763, Montreal developed as a commercial centre. It outgrew Que-bec City and for a time was the seat of Parliament. English was- - as prominent as French in community affairs. Under Confederation in 1867, when the Dominion of Canada was created and Quebec got a distinct provincial government, the French population grew steadily and its language became widespread in Montreal. The city's businessmen, most of them English-speakin- g, developed Montreal into the head-quarters of Canadian banking and finance, as a major port and a commercial and manufacturing lo-cation, and as the country's metro-polis. Today, control of Canadian bu-siness activity is shifting to To-ronto and westward, although Montreal remains one of Canada's most important and active cities. It still is the principal meeting place of the country's French and En-glish language groups, as well as the new home of people who have come to Canada from many parts of the world. Attention given to Montreal in recent years is due largely to its mayor, Jean Drapeau, who had an early term as a reformer in 1954-5- 7 and since 1960 has been re-elect- ed regularly. A dreamer of grand designs, Mayor Drapeau was the chief promoter of Expo '67 cele-brating Canada's Centennial, and of the Summer Olympics of 1976. His idea always has been to make Montreal what he calls an "inter-national city". The large island on which Mon-treal has grown is at the ionfluen-c- e of the St. Lawrence and Ottawa rivers. The island, from which a small mountain rises, is 50 km long and 14 km at its widest point. The St. Lawrence breaks into rapids on the southern side of the island and to overcome that ob-stacle to navigation the Lachine Canal was built in 1835. The extensive St. Lawrence Sea-way System, a Canada-Unite- d Sta-tes undertaking inaugurated in 1957, put the Lachine Canal into disuse. The Seaway's eastern en-trance is at Montreal. The port of Montreal is 1,600 km from the Atlantic and its facilities rank among the best in the world. By means 6f ice retainers and icebreaking ships, the port has traffic almost 12 months a year, although acitivity is reduced in winter when the St. Lawrence Seaway is inoperative. Montral's island location has involved building many bridges to connect roads, highwasy and rail-ways to the mainland for the metropotitan area population of 2.75 million. The oldest section of Montreal ,lieg .cjojse .tp,the .waterfojit.,The. narrow streets have been preserved and many of the two-an- d three--store- y stone buildings have been renovated as apartment residen- - ces, boutiques and restaurants. The district is called Old Montreal and city authorities hope to protect its character. Nearby St. James Street, now bearing the French name St. Jacques, was once in the heart of the financial district but that has moved north, about one km to Dorchester Boulevard where buil-dings are newer and taller. St. Jacques, with a large new provincial courthouse at its eastern end, not far form the old City Hall building, now has many law of-fices. The offices of the daily newspapers La Presse and The Gazette are on St. Jacques street and those of the select daily, Le Devoir, are a short distance away near Notre Dame Church, which faces Place d'Armes and is at the location of the city's first parish church. The best-know- n hotels are within easy reach of the centre of the city. A large exhibition centre, Place Bonaventure, is located in a building that also has a hotel, a shopping area and restaurants. A downtown convention centre is under construction. Many of the buildings in the heart of the city are connected by underground shopping malls that also connect with the principal railway station and the Metro, the 16-years-- old subway system who-se trains run on inflated rubber tires. The headquarters of the Cana-dian Pacific and Canadian National Railways are in Montreal as well as the head offices of Air Canada. Manufacturing industries related to the railways and to air transporta-tion and shipping also are located in the city. Domestic airline flights and flights to the United States use Dorval Airport, a 22.5 km drive from downtown Montreal. Overseas fl-ights use a new airport at Mirabel, 50 km from the city. Montrealers are good patrons for established French and English theatres and there are many cine-mas and entertainment in the three halls of the Place des Arts, the city's performing arts centre. The municipal Botanical Gar-dens, in the eastern section, are well attended, and public parks including one on Mount Royal, the city's mountain, are popular. Sports events including those at the costly Olimpic Stadium draw large crowds and the city is due to have a professional soccer team in 1981. Although surrounded by su- - .burbs, Montreal has kept a lively and attractive downtown district that its people and visitors enjoy. Political conflicts have caused tension at times, but a tradition od accommodation exists among people of different backgrounds and, as a general rule, citizens are able to conduct their lives without interference. New Course at George Brown College (Canadian Scene) — An Indu-strial Sewing Machine Mechanic Program, the only one of its kind in Canada, will begin at George Brown College, Toronto, in Janu- - ary- - For information about the program, call George Brown Col-lege at 416-967-121- 2, Extension 646 . . . . - , .. ,
