that actor John. Stark con-cerns
himself with: the globe-trotting
lecturer, chuckling at his
own jokes, the hard-drinkin- g,
smoking, swearing club man; and
Leacock the public figure who was
4at home with royalty and the intel-.ligenci- a,
equally well as. he was
with his bar roonf cronies, telling
spicy Jokes. It's a portrait, not
only of a remark'able writer"; but
also a remarkable man.
Stark, Whose success rests pr
manly on his one man show about
Leacock, once formed his own
theatre company. His first play, in
Л965, "The Ice Map Cometh,"
was acclaimed as a brilliant piece
of theatre. Future productions by
the theatre "were also well rec-eived.
Stark also designed and created
the decor for such films as "Five
Easy Pieces,". "Carnal Know-ledge,"
"Food for the Gods," and
many television series.
In 1970, he spent several
months in Yugoslavia on a cul-tural
exchange and began trans-lating
and 'adapting the plays of
Miroslav Krlcza, a Nobel Prize
nominee. , .
Stark directed the world prem-iere
of his translation of the, Kr-Jez- a
play "In Agony," recently. for
the "Canadian government, and
will .soon . stage, a second play,
