Some of us tald Capt. Haey that we would nat go on drill again. There was a strategist in our campany, an aid British soldier. and he put forward .a plan to' which we agreed, after he had assured us that we cauld not be court martialed. as the blighter had nO' mIlitary standing. Baer was to' fall in at the centre af the line, thus he would be directly in frant af the D.M. af LA. We were an the drill graund next day when he arrived. with sword and scabbard at his side, which gave him a real military pase. lacking the previaus days when he anly had a batan. GIVES FINAL ORDERS
This was to' be the last day. and he lined us up far final manauvers and gave his arders. Shan! By the right dress! Fix bayonets! Shaulder arms! Right abaut! Quick march! A smile spread all alang the line, but was drapped when we gat near the fence. and ardered right about, quick march, 20 paces' Dauble up. 20 paces' Charge 20 paces' We grasped aur rifles as instructed antI every man started to yell like fiends. At 20 paces he called halt' We did nat halt. Bael' was directly in frant of him and loaked like a typical Afghan. and all af us racing fa'rward. He drew his sword, raised it above his head. and yelled. Came an boys. and ran down the path as fast as he eauld gO'. When he saw thert was nO' pursuit he slawed to' a brisk military walk, and nO' daubt raconted at the afficer's mess that evenin,; haw he had led the charge of NO'. 2 Company af Prince Albert volunteers. We wauld have fallowed him to hell or Batoche. but were jammed at the endaf a ane man trail, and canvulsed with laughter. We all agi-eed at meS5 that night. that he showed a high degree of military genius, when he cauld So' quickly adapt himself to' unfareseen circumstances.
