than the red squirrel, with ears very round and with tufts on them;
the colour brownish, the whiskers quite black, as well as the tip of
the tail. The other is smaller and has the tip of the tail black. I
have only seen It close to the mountains. A third is a large ground
squirrel, with a tail somewhat resembling that of a flying- squirrel,
which may be a spermophile.
N O R T H E R N CHIPMUNK— E u t a m i a s quadrivittatus borealis
( A l l e n ) .
Specimens of this chipmunk were collected at Salt River
( an affluent of the Slave R i v e r below Fort Smith, Athabasca
D i s t r i c t ) , Forts Resolution and Rac, Great Slave Lake, Fort
L i a r d , and one also by the writer, labelled " Mackenzie
R i v e r , ' ' which was probably secured between Fort Good
Hope and F o r t Simpson. I never observed any i n the Anderson
region. Mr. Ross* gives its range as extending to Fort
Good Hope, and states these animals were very destructive
to such garden produce as was raised at Fort Resolution.
Dr. Frank Russell secured two examples at Grand Rapids,
near the outlet of the Saskatchewan River into Lake
Winnipeg.
S A Y ' S CHIPMUNK— E u t a m i a s lateralis Say, sp.
M r . Drummond obtained examples of this species i n the
Rocky Mountains some seventy or more years ago, i n about
latitude 5 7 ° north. I cannot say that I ever saw a specimen,
neither did M r . Preble on his recent collecting expeditions
to Hudson's Bay meet with or hear aught of this
chipmunk.
P A R R Y ' S SPERMOPHILE— C i t e l l u s pamji ( Richardson).
Abundant, i n the Barren Grounds, on the Arctic coast,
and i n the vicinity of many of the rivers and lakes of the
